Helen, the founder and owner of Knit or Dye, is an indie dyer based on Bribie Island, Qld. As a trained marine biologist, Helen gains inspiration from the natural world, specifically animals, plants and landscapes native to Australia. Knit or Dye strives to make a minimal environmental impact. Apart from dyeing yarn, Helen knits, crochets and spins, so knows the importance of good fibre. Her collection of hand dyed yarn is beautiful, soft and practical, an often tricky combination!

Hello! Nice to see you here. I’m Helen, and I love yarn. I have always been ‘crafty’. As a child, I was shown by my parents that working with my hands is both important and a way to make a living. I was exposed to fibre crafts at a young age and my obsessive personality trapped me in a yarn-shaped rabbit hole that I couldn’t get out of (not that I wanted to!). That same obsessive personality made fibre a very important practice to keep my anxieties in check.
I am passionate about the environment and strive to make my environmental footprint as small as possible in all aspects of my life, including my business which uses recycled and compostable packaging and almost zero plastic.
I am a mother of two beautiful boys (5 and 2) who are the most perfect (non-yarn related) things I have ever made.
